  • Exercise Machines That Burn the Most Calories

    30 June 2013

There is a lot of cardiovascular equipment at the gym – whether it is a home or a professional gym. Which is the best among them for optimal fat and weight loss? Which burns the most calories? Is it the treadmill, the elliptical machine, the rowing machine, stairs - or something else? We are going to find it out in this article.

    1. Treadmill

A treadmill burns about 100 calories per mile, when walking briskly, for a 130 pound woman. This is available in most gyms and easy to use if you are a newbie to the fitness field. This machine can be adjusted to many fitness levels by changing the speed or even adjusting the inclination. Do not hold on to the handles when you jog if you want maximum calorie loss.

Running up on an inclination is the safe and easiest way to increase your metabolic rate for hours even after you've finished the workout. This offers the maximum burn. Walking on a treadmill burns about 300-400 calories per hour, which is not much compared to some other machines. But walking is easy exercise, since we have been doing it from a very early stage in our life.

    2. Elliptical Machines

These machines are a good alternative to treadmills because they cause less strain on our joints. Since you work out in a standing position most of the muscle groups are used – great for fat loss.

Elliptical machines with arm movements increases the calorie burn but do not go for this type if you are a beginner. This machine burns about 600 calories per hour, even without arm movements.

    3. Stationary Bikes

This machine causes the least impact on our joints. People who are prone to knee pain can change to bikes for fat loss with less impact on joints because the body weight is not a concern here as in other machines like a stair stepper or elliptical machines. But bikes burn fewer calories, as you need to drive 4 miles to burn 100 calories.

    4. Rowing Machines

Rowers are the most advanced cardio machines available on the market. On this machine you need to push the legs and pull the arms at the same time, and it needs more co-ordination. Rowing machines also work on the abdominal muscles while supporting and protecting your back. This machine works on lots of muscle groups, and rowers burns a lot of calories.

This is the best upper and lower body workout, and can burn over 1000 calories per hour. This is one cardiac activity where you exercise just below your anaerobic verge and so will burn the maximum calories from fat than from glucose. A caveat - this is the last machine you want to use if you have back issue, as it puts strain on the back.

So, if you want to burn the maximum calories in minimum time, go for the rowing machine. If control and back pain is an issue then a stationary bike will be your best friend. Choose the exercise machine that fits you the best. Comfort level is very important in fitness. Exercise at least 3 - 4 days a week for the best effect.
